Our 10 top tips on how we can save the planet, together
We only get one planet #ThereIsNoPlanetB. During March, we have been showcasing our top tips on how little changes we can make in our everyday lives can contribute towards saving our planet. We must educate our audience and use our voices to strive for a better future for our planet. The challenges we have can seem daunting, but we can all do something and work together, for the better.
#1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Cut down on what you throw away. Follow the three R's to conserve natural resources and landfill space. It is important to know that every product and item which we buy has an environmental footprint and that waste has huge negative impacts on our natural environment due to harsh chemicals being released from rubbish in landfill sites. When we recycle, we reduce the amount of pollution. When we recycle we reduce the need for raw materials so the rainforests can be preserved.
#2. Do your bit to give back. Be mindful of where you purchase your clothes from and choose slow fashion over fast fashion. By supporting volunteering for cleanups in the community, we can collectively make an impact. Sustainable brands focus on longevity and quality, clothes are made to last and not be replaced after a few weeks. Slow fashion brands look at organic fabrics which are kinder to the environment and to the people who produce them. When choosing slow fashion, not only are you contributing to a better environment but you are also making a better decision for your wallet long term.
#3. Educate. When you further your education, you can help others understand the importance and value of our natural resources. One of the best ways we can make a difference is to stay informed. Having conversations with peers and reinforcing your knowledge to them is key to raising awareness and ultimately taking action for our planet.
#4. Shop wisely. Buy less plastic and buy a reusable shopping bag.
When we use less plastic, we use less carbon dioxide and that means reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The impact which plastic is having on our marine life is far more than drastic and we need to think twice with every move we make, it is important to use alternatives such as metal straws and reusable shopping bags.
#5. Conserve water.
The less water you use, the less polluted the runoff that eventually ends up in the ocean.
Water conservation matters and we currently take for granted that water is here at our disposal. Did you know that 1 in 4 people admit they take water availability for granted, and almost 67% feel that they wouldn’t be able to use less water than they already do? With climate change, global warming and the unpredictable weather which comes with it is becoming increasingly hard to predict water supply. Simple life changes and behaviour changes over time can help with this, such as rainwater harvesting, water-efficient toilets and taking shorter showers.
#6. Plant a tree. Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change.
Trees are vital in contributing to the environment, by providing oxygen, conserving water, preserving soil and supporting our natural wildlife.
#7. Don't send chemicals into our waterways. Choose non-toxic chemicals.
It is as simple as taking care! Together, we need to start disposing of chemicals properly, taking all of our leftover products and harsh chemicals to a recycling waste disposal unit or by arranging a collection. There aren’t any excuses when it comes to disposing of these properly.
#8. Use long-lasting light bulbs. Energy-efficient light bulbs use less energy which contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
#9. Walk more, bike more. Drive less.
Bikes have a tiny manufacturing carbon footprint in comparison to cars, they can be produced for a fraction of what a car can be, using much less energy and cost. Bikes also eliminate the harmful and poisonous chemicals which are pumped into the environment, reducing carbon footprint overall. Not to mention, the perfect way to look after the environment and your health.
#10. Be mindful! Look after our wildlife, look after our planet and raise awareness to the wider audience.
We need to act now to make the one, and the only planet we have a better place for all and future generations. The cost of us not acting now will be far worse in the years to come.
